Project Managers in Healthcare

Healthcare institutions challenged with technological advances and other strategic concerns and they engaged regularly in process improvements and quality management projects should consider putting together and maintaining their organic project management offices (PMOs). The thought here is that a project management office could provide assistance, as it is a team that could provide centralized control of the projects.  The office is staffed with the project manager(s) whose mission is to help the organization achieve its strategic objectives.


The project managers in the health care environment should have project-specific knowledge and skills. The knowledge should indicate what the person know about project management that will enable them to meet the institution's strategic requirements. The aforementioned can assist organizations in evaluating what the project managers can do that will help the organization accomplish its strategic objectives. 


An organization may then assign their strategic projects to the project managers that would focus only on managing and completing them. That way, administrators and health care managers can concentrate on the operations, which deliver health services while projects attain their goal. 


Understanding health institutions dissimilar, the project support structure can reflect an organization's leadership structure, its culture, and its mission. With these considerations, the project managers in healthcare organizations could report to functional or department managers.  In certain cases, they may function as an autonomous entity, where project managers are one of more that support the enterprise projects, programs and or portfolios. 


The healthcare organizations' structures might dictate the reporting structures and the project management team size.  Nonetheless, they are able to provide valuable service to help improve health care.  An elaborate setup for the PMO may be too much for some organizations that may not plan many projects, so my suggestion would be to start with a small team.
